Walk AmbassadorIt was Valentine’s Day 2006 and Stephanie had just received her 4 year old vaccinations. Afterwards, she complained that her leg hurt, it was bruised and she began to walk with a limp. After a week of these symptoms, we called her doctor and he explained that her leg was sore from the vaccinations and that we should give her Tylenol. We called after the second week and were told the same thing. By the third week, we were sitting in the doctor’s office.
Stephanie was still limping and looked a little pale. Our Dr. examined her and could not find the source of her limp and felt that she must have hyper extended her knee and kept reinjuring it and she did not look pale to him. He said that he was really not concerned, but stated that if we were concerned he would write up orders for blood work and x-rays. We left the office hopeful that nothing was wrong and did not take her to be tested.
Three days later we received a call from her school that she had fallen and needed to be picked up. It was 3:00 on that Friday, March 10, 2006 when we had her tested. I asked when we might get the test results and was told that we would hear something by Monday. I arrived at home by 4:00 and at 5:00, the phone rang. I was told that her blood work needed to be retested, the numbers didn’t look right, but it was probably just a mistake. We were told to take Stephanie to the Emergency Room at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital immediately.
Upon arrival at the ER, her blood was retested and she was immediately given a blood transfusion. She was admitted to the hospital for further testing. The hospital took the weekend to rule out other possibilities, but they suspected Leukemia from the start.
A bone marrow biopsy was performed on Monday, March 13, 2006 and Stephanie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. A port was implanted in her abdomen on Tuesday and she began Chemotherapy on Wednesday.
Stephanie received Chemotherapy for over two years and was in and out of the hospital several times throughout the course of treatment. She ended all treatment on June 27, 2008 and has been cancer free ever since. Today, she is a happy, healthy 8 year old. She loves to play basketball and ride her bike. Life is Grand and we could not be more grateful to the wonderful staff at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital for saving our daughter’s life. Now, let’s cure ALL Kid’s Cancer!
