Walk Ambassador

Zachary.jpgIn April 2005, 18-month-old Zachary was admitted to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Emergency Department with a mass in his abdomen. After multiple tests, he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma—an aggressive cancer which forms in the adrenal glands and attacks the nervous system. His tumor took up two-thirds of his chest. Within five days, he began an 18-week chemotherapy schedule, consisting of three days of chemo and 10 days off. By the end of his chemotherapy, the tumor shrunk by 50 percent. Two days before his second birthday, doctors removed the tumor—still unsure if it was attached to his organs. The removal was successful—even though parts of the tumor were removed from his spinal cord. Eighteen months after surgery, Zachary was monitored with CT scans to check for tumors. At age of 3 1/2, the doctors gave his family some wonderful news—he was in remission. Zachary has been living a healthy, active, cancer-free life for three years now. Thanks to the skilled and knowledgeable team at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorder Center of Children's.
